Women's Health

Women's health refers to the health of women, which differs from that of men in many unique ways. Here at Tapia Internal Medicine Clinic PLLC we offer well-women exams, including pap smears and breast exams; ordering mammograms and bone density scans; manage acute gynecological medical concerns; offer contraception counseling; and also hormone replacement therapy or HRT. Referrals to specialist are available as well when necessary.

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is a complete physical that includes an examination of your reproductive organs. During the exam the physicians at Tapia Internal Medicine Clinic PLLC will obtain your vitals, including heart rate, blood pressure, height and weight. The provider will then examine your body from head to toe, looking into your eyes and ears, feeling your organs and checking your reflexes. This will also include a pelvic exam.

Why would I need a Pap smear?

The Pap smear checks for abnormalities in the cells of your cervix. Abnormal cells may be a sign of cervical cancer. Detecting changes early may improve the success of treatment.

What is a breast exam?

Clinical breast examinations can detect a lump in your breast and other changes that might require more testing. Breast exams are one of the most important early breast cancer screenings. If more testing is required your physician may order a mammogram. A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast.

Why do I need a bone density scan?

Osteoporosis is a common disease that is characterized by low bone mass, microarchitectural disruption, and skeletal fragility, resulting in an increased risk of fracture. The goal of bone density screening is to identify persons at increased risk of sustaining a low-trauma fracture who would benefit from intervention to minimize that risk.

What are acute gynecological medical concerns?

  • Irregularities in your menstrual cycle.
  • Pelvic or menstrual pain.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Yeast infections.
